Tenor Sungho Christian Kim

Tenor Sungho Kim was born in Gwangmyeong (South Korea). He first completed a Bachelor of Music in singing at the National University of the Arts in Korea with Prof. Kwangsun Song, which was followed by a Master's degree at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin with Prof. Ewa Wolak and Ks. Julia Varady. Meanwhile, he attended master classes u. a. with professors Seungseo Na and Maurizio Carnelli in Seoul, Lioba Braun, Deborah Polaski, Bejun Mehta, Gerd Uecker, Christiane Karg and Brigitte Fassbaender in Hamburg, and Thomas Hampson and Barbara Frittoli in Verbier.

In summer 2021 he made his debut at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland as Rodolfo (La Bohème) and was honored there with the Verbier Festival's highest award “Prix Yves Paternot”.

His awards include ​2023 BBC Cardiff singer of the world Song Prize winner,1st prize at the International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition (2018), as before at the 47th Nanpa Music Competition in Suweon (2015), the 33rd Daegu Singing Competition in Daegu (2015), Gloria Opera "Yang suhwa" -Competition and National Singing Competition in Seoul. In addition, he won i.a. a special prize and was a finalist at the 54th International Singing Competition Concurso Internacional de Canto Francisco Viñas in Barcelona (2016) and in 2020 at the Glyndebourne Opera Cup in England and at the International Music Competition in Cologne (2021). He recently received a 2nd prize at the Salvatore Licitra Concurso in Milan (2020). In the 2018/19 season, Sungho Kim became a member of the International Opera Studio of the Hamburg State Opera. Here he sang u. a. conducted by Kent Nagano Scaramuccio (Ariadne auf Naxos). He was also on stage as Gaston/Victorin (Die tote Stadt), Abdallo (Nabucco) and Joe (La fanciulla del West). In summer 2021 he made his debut at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland as Rodolfo (La Bohème) and was honored there with the highest award of the Verbier Festival "Prix Yves Paternot".

 

 

In 2020/21 he became a permanent member of the ensemble at the Dortmund Opera, where he has since interpreted numerous roles, e.g. Belmonte (The Abduction from the Seraglio), Fortunatus (Frédégonde), Camille de Rosillon (The Merry Widow), Alvar (Fernand Cortez or The Conquest of Mexico), Tamino (The Magic Flute and The Mystery of the Magic Flute) and Léopold (La Juive) . In the 2023/24 season, Sungho Kim is u. a. as Rodolfo (La Bohème) and Quyokuma/Fantastikuss (in the world premiere Die Reise zu Planet 9).
